When I was set to the task of finding an instrumental piece to design a piece for I found a few songs that was really interested in but they all had vocals which was against the assignment. After listening to the pieces many time I decided on the song “Moon in her belly”.I picked the song because it has complex changes between the middle of the song and the beginning of the end. He also uses interesting instruments, some that are put through personalized distortions. Even with the strange unique instrumentation he is able keep the song as continuous, and cohesive. For the project we are asked to make one color piece and one black and white piece.
Moon in her belly, as created by Sxip Shirey, is a complex song preformed with various homemade instruments. Visually representing this piece I was unsure what would best reflect the disjointed nature of the song. Sxip is able to, with this piece take two very different auditory settings and get them to sit with each other. primarily the beginning of the piece and the end of the piece are mysterious, utilizing bells and harmonicas, while the climax of the piece is rhythmatic and thumping.
I decided to represent the piece using a triptych where the first frame represents the mystery with a pastel image of smoke with two forms slightly drifting apart. The smoke trails to the lower right hand corner. The second piece is an acrylic piece with color representing the change in intensity and a slight abstraction of a train running from the upper right hand corner to the lower left. The last piece will again return to the smoke representation, as the song returns to its mysterious roots. There will be clouds and smoke above the train in the second piece that will connect the first and the third piece of the triptych.
The black and white piece it technically a diptych that consists of one frame that has a cigarette in and ashtray with smoke trailing through the image to the upper left hand side, with two form intertwined. The left frame the smoke continues against a black backdrop with the two forms slightly pulled apart. These parts represent the more mysterious instrumentation and the subtle sexual overtones are characterized by the figures in the composition.
The color part of the project I decided to represent the explosive middle of the song, where the pace of the song is changed and it becomes a forceful pounding rhythm wich I will represent with an abstraction of a train.

Final:
This is my current imagining of "Moon in her Belly" ( To refresh your memory I have it linked here as well)
My imagining in a diptych/Triptych where there is a smoke panel where the smoke moves through the color piece into the last panel where it ends at a cigarette in an ash try.

Layout
I had that hardest time in trying to come up with a company out of the color words Ethereal Oceanic, but in the end I settled on two. One company is an art restoration firm, and the other is a fictitious Cryogenic lab that specializes in long term storage of living cadavers for later reanimation.
The logos are as follows:
The Art Restoration Firm
I wanted the logo to have an Oceanic feel while still being slightly engaging. I came up with a simplified cruise ship crashing through a wall of waves. I used Papyrus Font as I thought it both looked professional, but had a distinct character.
And for the Cryogenic lab:
The letter head, and the business card for the first company is:
With the letter head I wanted to get all the information on the page without it feeling cluttered, and wanted to add a touch of color, so I went with the light blue gradient.
With the business card I wanted to keep the Logo large but out of the way, and I wanted the information to stand on its own. Again I used a light blue gradient to add a little character to the letter head.
The first companies logo is Black and White is:
Which I think holds up well.

Nuvo
Again with the Nouveau I had a few iterations, I tried to combine a lunar image behind the lunar moth. The image I feel could use a little more embellishment but I think work well for the assignment.
Deco
I had multiple iterations of my deco composition, and while I think it was successful I feel like I could have gotten it a bit more deco, but Im happy with the results. The process is as follows.
